In 1907 a Committee appointed by the Legislature and then a Legislative Commission appointed by Governor Comer investigated the conduct and management of Bryce Hospital. The Commission heard testimonies of witnesses who had preferred charges of cruelty, lack of sufficient or inferior food, uncleanliness, and murder. The Commission examined the circumstances of the deaths of several patients, especially of Hines and Mazengo, who were reported to have been killed by certain nurses. It referred several cases to the Grand Jury of Tuscaloosa County and recommended an increase in appropriations for the maintenance of the Hospital. Eventually, charges against the Hospital were cleared, and it was believed that a former patient, angry because he had been detained there, paid witnesses to testify against the hospital. Included are copies of articles from the Montgomery Advertiser and the Tuscaloosa Times-Gazette, the report of the Legislative Commission, part of the Grand Jury report, part of the Report of the Resident Committee of Trustees, and the report of Judge J.M. Chilton to the Trustees. The reports may be found in a bound volume entitled "Bulletins, Insane Hospitals, 1874-1907."
